(Suggested Anchor Intro):
Dedicated to our men and women in
uniform--and all those who've given their lives for our country--the 2017 "National Memorial-Day
Concert" returns live, from the West Lawn of the U-S Capitol.
And, joining Joe Mantegna ["monn-tain-yuh"] this year is first-time host,
Laurence Fishburne. Among the performers at this year's concert is
Vanessa Williams...
(WILLIAMS):
"IT'S IMPORTANT FOR ME TO PAY TRIBUTE TO OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN THE ARMED FORCES, ON
'MEMORIAL DAY'. MY GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER WAS ONE OF THE FIRST
'COLORED' TROOPS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CIVIL WAR--BACK IN THE 1800'S. I COME FROM A LONG LINE OF MILITARY:
MY FATHER WAS IN THE ARMY; MY GRANDFATHER WAS AT WEST POINT; MY UNCLE WAS IN THE AIR FORCE.
AND, I REALLY BELIEVE THAT THE SERVICE THAT THEY PROVIDED MAKES US FREE, TODAY."
(Suggested Anchor Tag):
During the concert, Gary Sinise ["sin-ees"] will present a 75th-anniversary salute to World-War
Two's "Doolittle Raiders". This year's lineup also includes:
General Colin Powell; Renée Fleming;
Scotty McCreery; "Five for Fighting"; John
Ortiz; Christopher Jackson; Ana ["aah-nah"]
Ortiz; Ronan Tynan; Auli'i Cravalho ["ow-lee-ee
cruh-val-lee-oh"]; Russell Watson; and a performance from the
"National Symphony Orchestra". The 2017
"National Memorial-Day Concert" will air live, on P-B-S, Sunday, May 28th, at eight p-m, Eastern; check local listings, for the time in your area.
